Excellent reference. I just read a summary of the work and will read the fuller version. I agree with their findings. It goes far to explaining, how we repeat these cyclic patterns, over and over gain. It's the seasons, we watch every year, in nature.
I would say we are in the Third (unraveling) now.
Carrying their timeline forward (where they predict the last Third turning, would last until roughly 2005), they seem to be on schedule...every 20 years.
I wonder how they would view the 'Globality" (who knew that was a word...except spell check??) of these turnings, in todays world. Everyone is basically going through these turning simultaneously...how does the worldwide syncing affect the process and the timeline. Is it accelerated, more severe, etc. I also wonder how social and political Overton windows affect the, recycled versions of the turnings. Do these windows stay shifted or do they reset?
My original reason for the new definition proposal, was to try and wake people to the enormity of the indoctrination program...given that these new sausage links, will be the main ingredients in the societal meals going forward for decades.
Thank you for adding this great info. It's one of the things I was looking for, when I decided to write this stack.
The “turnings” are roughly 20-25 years long and we’re in the fourth, the Crisis. The last fourth was the Great Depression and WWII. This fourth turning started ~2008 and should run through ~2030, but we’ll know for sure when we’re on the next first turning; expect everything to settle, think post-WWII period. The generations actually start a few years earlier so 2005 starts the next Artist generation (who are born/children during the Crisis turning).
The book focuses on British and American history through this lens, but clearly the whole globe is now in a Crisis turning. I think that might magnify this crisis and give it more energy, but that’s just my opinion.
I’ve found The Fourth Turning (Straus & Howe) an extremely helpful “lens” through which the generations made the most sense to me.
